🔴 RUSSELL BRAND RAPE TRIAL - REPORTING DAY 1
Comedian, actor and podcaster Russell Brand, 51, who lives in Florida and maintains an address in Oxfordshire, arrived at Southwark Crown Court on Monday morning as the long-awaited trial concerning multiple allegations of historical sexual offences officially got underway with the commencement of jury selection.
The 51-year-old defendant, dressed in a grey suit, a white unbuttoned shirt with a neckerchief, brown boots and aviator sunglasses which he removed as he faced a media scrum outside, stepped out of a black Mercedes accompanied by his wife Laura Gallacher.
Flanked by security personnel, Brand was ushered past packed rows of photographers and journalists before entering the courthouse ahead of proceedings in Court 3.
Massive public and media interest dominated the opening day, with reporters queuing for more than two hours prior to the 9.30am start to secure one of only twenty-two restricted media seats available in the courtroom.
Late arrivals and overflow press were forced to watch proceedings via a live video link in a separate courtroom or through remote computer connections.
Inside Court 3, the spatial arrangement placed the small press gallery directly behind the glass box of the dock, positioning journalists immediately behind the defendant where he sat attentively throughout the day alongside his legal team.
The core business of Monday's opening session before Mr Justice Bennathan centred entirely upon the meticulous process of jury selection.
A random panel of fifty prospective jurors, drawn directly from the electoral register of the area served by the court, filled the public and seating areas as the trial judge addressed them directly regarding the intense pre-existing publicity surrounding the case.
Mr Justice Bennathan informed the prospective panel that they were about to embark upon the trial of Russell Brand, noting that many would undoubtedly have heard of him and recalling that approximately three years ago a television documentary broadcast on Channel 4 and an extensive investigative article published in The Times newspaper aired serious allegations of sexual misconduct against the defendant, which he has firmly and consistently denied.
In a crucial measure to ensure absolute impartiality, the judge instructed the prospective panel that any individual who remembered viewing the Channel 4 documentary or reading the Times article when it was published three years prior should immediately indicate so by raising a hand.
Following this judicial directive, six members of the initial jury panel were promptly excused and dismissed from service after confirming they recalled the historic media coverage.
The preliminary vetting process continued through the day, with the court eventually rising in the afternoon after a reduced group of potential jurors was successfully assembled.
Mr Justice Bennathan instructed these prospective jurors to return to Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday morning at 10am for the final selection and swearing-in of the twelve-person panel.
The prosecution team is led by Riel Karmy-Jones KC, who will formally open the Crown's case to the newly sworn jury once the final selection concludes. The defence is led by Ian Winter KC, who represents the accused.
Brand faces a total of seven criminal charges brought by six separate complainants, with the alleged offences spanning a decade between 1999 and 2009 across locations including London and Bournemouth.
The specific counts on the indictment, all of which Brand denies, comprise three charges of rape, three allegations of sexual assault and a single count of indecent assault.
Because the complainants retain lifelong anonymity under British law, their identities remain strictly protected. Legal arguments and final jury formation will resume on Tuesday morning, with the prosecution's opening statements anticipated to be delivered on Wednesday.
