Comedian, actor and podcaster Russell Brand, 51, who lives in Florida in the United States and also maintains an address in Oxfordshire, has appeared silent and tight-lipped at Southwark Crown Court for the start of two days of critical pre-trial legal arguments ahead of his forthcoming rape and sexual assault trial.

The 51-year-old defendant arrived at the court building on Tuesday morning for preliminary legal proceedings before his trial proper begins on Monday 12 October 2026.

The trial is expected to draw international media attention and is anticipated to last between 10 and 12 weeks. Brand, who remains on court bail during the criminal proceedings, has pleaded not guilty to all seven counts on the indictment, which arise from allegations made by six women covering a ten-year period between 1999 and 2009.

The defendant faces three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault and one allegation of indecent assault. Brand denies all allegations of non-consensual sexual activity.

Details disclosed during previous court hearings outlined the specific nature of the Crown allegations, which allege that Brand raped a woman in a hotel room during the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth.

Further allegations allege that the defendant grabbed the breasts of a television worker and forced her into a sex act inside a toilet, as well as kissing and groping a radio station worker.

The formal police investigation was launched by detectives more than two years ago following a joint investigative report published by Channel 4 and The Sunday Times.

Brand arrived at Southwark Crown Court roughly an hour early on Tuesday morning, stepping out of a black Mercedes while dressed in a grey suit jacket, white open shirt and sunglasses.

He walked slowly past waiting news photographers and members of the press pack without answering questions. The defendant was accompanied by his wife, Laura Gallacher, who wore a yellow suit, and was flanked by a personal security guard who was spotted holding a copy of the Bible as the group entered the court building.

After remaining inside the courthouse while legal arguments were submitted before the judge on Tuesday, Brand departed the building in the afternoon. As he made his exit towards a waiting vehicle, an onlooker called out "Praise the Lord, Russell Brand", to which the defendant replied "God bless you for saying that" before leaving the premises.

The current legal arguments scheduled across Tuesday and Wednesday mark the final administrative and procedural stage before a jury is sworn in on Monday.

Brand rose to prominence as one of the most recognisable stand-up comedians in Britain during the 2000s, hosting television spin-off shows for Big Brother before starring in major Hollywood feature films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek.

In recent years the defendant shifted his career focus toward podcasting, online influencing and video content creation on platforms such as Rumble, relocating his primary residence to the United States while retaining his residential property in Oxfordshire.

He will return to Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday to conclude the pre-trial arguments before the main trial opens next week.
