Accessibility Statement
Our Commitment
VPNews is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We are continually improving the user experience for everyone, and applying the relevant accessibility standards to ensure we provide equal access to all of our users.
Conformance Status
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities, and user-friendly for everyone.
Measures We Take
VPNews takes the following measures to ensure accessibility:
- Semantic HTML — We use proper heading hierarchy, landmarks, and ARIA attributes throughout the site.
- Keyboard navigation — All interactive elements are fully accessible via keyboard. A visible focus indicator is provided on all focusable elements.
- Skip navigation — A "Skip to main content" link is provided at the top of every page.
- Colour contrast — Text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast ratio requirements (minimum 4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text).
- Alternative text — Images include descriptive alternative text. Decorative images are marked as presentational.
- Responsive design — The site is fully responsive and usable on all screen sizes. Content reflows without horizontal scrolling at 400% zoom.
- Reduced motion — Animations are disabled when the user has enabled the "prefers-reduced-motion" setting.
- Focus management — Modal dialogs (such as the mobile menu) trap focus correctly and return focus on close.
- Structured data — Articles include JSON-LD structured data for screen readers and assistive technologies.
Compatibility
VPNews is designed to be compatible with the following assistive technologies:
- Screen readers (VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS)
- Screen magnification software
- Speech recognition software
- Keyboard-only navigation
The site is designed to work with current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
Known Limitations
Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations:
- Embedded third-party content — Some embedded content (YouTube videos, social media posts) may not be fully accessible as they are controlled by third-party providers.
- Legacy article content — Some older articles imported from our previous CMS may contain images without alternative text. We are working to address these on an ongoing basis.
- Live court coverage — Real-time updates are delivered via a live feed. Screen readers will be notified of new content, but the experience may vary across assistive technologies.
