Serial Dating App Rapist Muhammad Ans Jailed for 20 Years

A serial rapist who systematically targeted women on various digital dating applications before forcing them into depraved sexual acts has been jailed for 20 years following a complex investigation by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Muhammad Ans, 29, of no fixed abode, appeared at Plymouth Crown Court yesterday, Thursday, July 30, for sentencing after a 14-day trial culminated in unanimous guilty verdicts on four counts of rape involving three distinct victims.

In addition to his lengthy custodial term, the presiding judge, Judge Matthew Turner KC, imposed an extended license period of three years, ruling that Ans must also remain on the sex offenders register for the remainder of his life.

The court heard that Ans, who maintained a flat in Tavistock but previously operated out of Coventry, encountered the three victims via the Bumble, Badoo, and Tinder platforms between 2023 and 2025.

The prosecution outlined a uniform pattern of behavior wherein each of the women explicitly stated from the outset that they were seeking meaningful long-term relationships rather than casual encounters, making their personal boundaries entirely clear.

The Crown established that Ans deliberately manipulated his victims by projecting a charismatic and educated persona during initial interactions, only to aggressively override their lack of consent once he successfully engineered situations to isolate them.

Detailing the individual indictments, the prosecution explained that Ans met his first victim on Bumble toward the end of 2023.

After dining together, he transported her back to his then-accommodation in Coventry, where he carried out the first rape. The court heard that he subsequently subjected the same woman to further rapes during a series of incidents in early 2024.

In August of that year, Ans attempted to initiate contact again, prompting the victim to confront him via text message regarding the assaults.

Rather than denying the allegations at that stage, Ans apologized and offered to compensate her by taking her on shopping trips and out for meals, offers which the victim summarily declined.

A week later, having relocated to a flat in Tavistock, Ans matched with his second victim on the Badoo application. The court heard he collected the woman in his car and drove her to his flat, where the pair consumed alcohol.

Despite the victim explicitly stating she did not want to engage in sexual activity, pushing his hands away, and pulling her clothing back up, Ans forced himself upon her.

Following the assault, the victim challenged him via text message after being dropped home. The jury was shown messages in which Ans apologised, explicitly stating that he:

“Couldn't stop himself."

He further attempted to dissuade her from taking legal action by offering to take her to the beach, take her shopping, and, in a later exchange, offering a direct compensation payment of $3,000 to "leave it."

The victim refused the financial inducement, took screenshots of the incriminating text messages as evidence, and formally reported the matter to the police that same day.

The report triggered an immediate investigation led by Detective Constable Craig Ferguson. Discovering that Ans had absconded from his Tavistock address, police launched a wanted appeal and successfully tracked the defendant to Leeds, where he was arrested.

During police interviews, Ans admitted meeting the second victim but insisted that all sexual contact had been entirely consensual, dismissing his written apologies and admissions as mere "confusion" on his part.

He was subsequently released on conditional bail. However, in August 2025, digital forensic experts analyzing Ans’s seized mobile phone uncovered the historic correspondence with his first victim, who was subsequently identified by officers and confirmed she had also been raped.

Concurrently, a third victim came forward to report that she had matched with Ans on Tinder, went for a drink with him, and was subsequently raped after they returned to her home address. The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently joined all three cases into a single indictment.

During the sentencing phase, the court received powerful victim personal statements illustrating the profound psychological trauma inflicted by the defendant.

The first victim described the devastating impact of the violence, stating that the assault left her with severe anxiety, intrusive thoughts, intense nausea, and debilitating panic attacks that severely disrupted her sleep.

She described Ans as a dangerous, predatory man whose actions forced her to dissociate completely from the woman she used to be. The second victim expressed intense rage toward the defendant, noting that his actions initiated some of the darkest and most difficult times of her life.

She noted that society frequently imagines a rapist as an armed stranger hiding in an alleyway, but that Ans proved a perpetrator could be charismatic, educated, and arrive with a smile.

The third victim detailed how the assault shattered her ability to trust men or form new relationships, explaining that she suffered from severe panic attacks and no longer felt safe within her own home.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Matthew Turner KC observed that each of the three victims was in a vulnerable position in their lives when Ans targeted them.

The judge noted that the women initially found the defendant charming, an attribute Ans actively exploited to satisfy his own sexual desires. Judge Turner described Ans’s total lack of recognition regarding his own criminality as:

"Deeply troubling,"

highlighting a complete and dangerous disconnect between the defendant's perception of his behavior and his single-minded pursuit of sexual gratification.

Following the conclusion of the proceedings, Detective Constable Craig Ferguson welcomed the 20-year sentence and paid tribute to the immense bravery and resilience of the three survivors, who supported a lengthy and complex trial process.

He noted that while the three women were entirely unknown to one another, their experiences were incredibly similar, proving that Ans acted as a calculated sexual predator.
