Wythenshawe Man Jailed for Life After Murdering Wife in Frenzied Knife Attack

A controlling and abusive husband who stabbed his wife at least 40 times in a frenzied, cold-blooded attack after learning she wanted to divorce him has been jailed for life.

Syed Rafay Ahmad, 45, appeared at Manchester Crown Court where he was ordered to serve a minimum term of 27 years and two months before becoming eligible to apply for parole. Ahmad, of Lulworth Gardens in the Wythenshawe area of Manchester, dramatically changed his plea during the third week of his trial, entering a formal admission of guilt to the charge of murder after spending three days giving evidence in the witness box.

The court heard that the brutal, deliberate, and determined assault occurred on the morning of Tuesday, January 27 this year, at around 8:30 am.

The victim, 36-year-old Anam Rafay, had been filling up a water bottle at the kitchen sink when her husband launched a sudden assault with a large kitchen knife. Despite sustaining multiple severe wounds, Mrs Rafay managed to escape the property and ran toward her next-door neighbour's house desperately crying out for help.

Ahmad pursued his fleeing wife outside, cornering her as she collapsed near the neighbour's front door, and relentlessly continued the frenzied stabbing. Eye-witnesses reported seeing Ahmad hold Mrs Rafay by the arm with one hand while repeatedly plunging the blade into her neck with the other.

Following the fatal attack, Ahmad calmly walked back toward his own residence, with neighbours noting that he appeared to openly smirk or smile as he left his dying wife on the ground. Upon returning indoors, Ahmad used his mobile phone to transmit a message to his family's WhatsApp group and directly to his wife's father, coldly stating: "I have killed my wife."

He then moved to an upstairs window to watch the scene unfold as emergency services were summoned. Greater Manchester Police officers arrived shortly thereafter and discovered Mrs Rafay unresponsive outside the address with catastrophic injuries.

Despite the immediate intervention of emergency responders, she was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. A subsequent post-mortem examination revealed that Mrs Rafay had suffered 40 distinct stab wounds spanning her neck, torso, arms, and legs, causing internal damage to both lungs, her diaphragm, kidney, liver, and spleen, alongside clear defensive injuries on her upper arms.

The prosecution detailed a long-standing history of coercive control, domestic abuse, and violence perpetrated by Ahmad against his wife throughout their marriage, which began as an arranged union when she was 16 and he was 25. Jurors heard that Ahmad's abusive behavior included kerb-crawling behind his wife as she walked to work, seizing total control of her wages, and inflicting physical assaults.

In June of the previous year, after falling in love with another man she met via social media, Mrs Rafay contacted a divorce mediator in Longsight to initiate the formal separation process.

She served the divorce application upon Ahmad the following October. Although she agreed to afford him one final opportunity to reform after he requested mediation, his behavior remained unchanged.

The evening before her death, Mrs Rafay explicitly informed Ahmad that the marriage was entirely over and that she was proceeding with the divorce.

Throughout his two-week trial, Ahmad sought to evade responsibility by denying the charge of murder. He initially claimed to police officers in recorded arrest footage that he had acted in self-defence, asserting that his wife had attacked him.

In court, he advanced a defense of diminished responsibility, asserting that he lacked the intent to kill because he was suffering from abnormal mental functioning brought on by a psychotic episode.

While giving evidence, Ahmad claimed under oath that he had heard an auditory hallucination—a voice instructing him that his wife was planning to smash his head in.

However, following three days of intense cross-examination, he abandoned the defense entirely and entered a guilty plea. His defence counsel, Mark Ford KC, later conceded that the prior assertions of diminished responsibility could be completely dismissed, describing the killing as an un-premeditated outburst borne out of fury upon confirming that the marriage had reached an end.

Mr Ford stated that Ahmad wished to express profound regret, though he acknowledged the court might view the statement with natural skepticism.

Passing sentence, Judge Suzanne Goddard KC fiercely condemned the defendant, explicitly ordering him to remove a tissue he had been repeatedly dotting at his face with so he could look at her directly.

Judge Goddard stated that it was entirely clear that Ahmad could not accept the reality of the impending divorce and was driven by intense jealousy over the fact his wife had met another man.

The judge observed that Ahmad had actively sought to exaggerate his mental health difficulties and had told deliberate lies while giving evidence, concluding that the incident was a sustained, horrific, and cold-blooded attack carried out with the absolute intent to kill.

As the mandatory life term was handed down, spontaneous clapping erupted from the public gallery. Ahmad was also made subject to an indefinite restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, alongside life-long placement on the sex offenders register.

An emotional victim personal statement from the victim's heartbroken father, Nadeem Khan, was read aloud to the court by prosecutor Bill Baker KC. Mr Khan described his daughter as an innocent and highly intelligent young woman who was incredibly dear to her parents.

He recalled the severe shock of receiving Ahmad’s text message, stating it felt as though the floor had been pulled from beneath their feet, leaving him and his wife weeping in each other's arms.

Mr Khan expressed deep anger at facing Ahmad in the courtroom, branding him a cruel man who would have faced the death penalty by hanging had the crime occurred in Pakistan. Speaking after the conclusion of the case, Detective Inspector Neil Higginson of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team extended his condolences to the family for their unimaginable loss.

He praised the immense strength of the victim's loved ones and thanked the members of the public who came forward to support the police investigation, adding that the substantial sentence would guarantee a highly dangerous offender remains behind bars for a very long time.
