Coventry Man Jailed For Raping Woman As She Slept

A man who raped a sleeping woman has been jailed for eight years following his conviction at Warwick Crown Court.

Leslie Mangwa, 33, of William Hillman Court, Coventry, attacked the woman in January 2024 after she had returned from a night out. The court heard that she awoke to find Mangwa sexually assaulting her. She screamed and forced him to leave the room before contacting police.

Mangwa denied rape, claiming the incident had been consensual. However, following a trial, he was found guilty on 4 August and sentenced on 29 August.

In addition to the custodial term, Mangwa was made subject to both a restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

West Midlands Police commended the victim for her courage in coming forward and urged other survivors of sexual offences to seek support. A spokesperson said:

“We know that reporting rape, sexual assault or other crimes such as indecent exposure or upskirting can feel daunting. We are here to support you whether you are ready to report to police or would prefer to speak with another service.”
