A 33-year-old Sudanese national who abducted a five-year-old girl from a Birmingham street before carrying out a sexual assault has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Abdulraziq Mohammed was convicted of false imprisonment with intent to commit a sexual offence and the sexual assault of a child under the age of 13 following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court.
The court heard that the victim was playing outside in Winson Green on 30 March last year when she was led into a room within a shared residential property.
CCTV evidence captured the moments preceding the abduction, showing the child outside the house before she was taken inside by the defendant.
An immediate search was conducted by the girl’s mother and a witness, who located the child after hearing cries coming from the building.
The witness observed Mohammed and the victim in a state of partial undress through an open window and was subsequently punched by the defendant while attempting to enter the room.
Members of the public forced entry into the property and detained Mohammed until West Midlands Police officers arrived to perform an arrest.
In addition to the sexual offences, the jury found Mohammed guilty of an assault charge related to the physical attack on the woman who intervened.
The sentencing judge ordered that the defendant be placed on the sex offenders register for an indefinite period as a matter of public protection.
The 11-year custodial term was handed down following a trial that detailed the significant breach of safety and the gravity of the sexual intent involved in the abduction.
Mohammed will serve the majority of his sentence in custody before being considered for release on licence under the strict supervision of the probation service.
