Tyrone Downing Jailed for Four Years Over Violent Tram Station Carjackings

A 19-year-old man who violently targeted women during a series of armed robberies and carjackings at a West Midlands tram station has been jailed for four years.

Tyrone Downing, from Wolverhampton, appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court on 26 August, where he was sentenced after pleading guilty to three counts of robbery, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and one count of attempted robbery.

The court heard that Downing carried out the string of violent offences at Wednesbury Parkway station between July 2024 and March 2025.

The crime spree began on 26 July 2024 when the teenager, wearing a balaclava, approached a woman at the tram stop and demanded her car keys.

As the victim managed to run away, she was punched in the face from behind.

Less than two weeks later, on 8 August, he robbed a man of his iPhone, producing a small knife that was used to slash the victim's arm during the altercation.

The violence escalated on 27 August when Downing approached a mother who was pushing her baby in a pram.

When the woman refused his demands to hand over her car keys, he struck her on the head before taking the keys and driving away from the station in her Ford Fiesta.

His final recorded offence took place on 31 March 2025 when he held a woman at knifepoint, pushed her to the ground and stole her Audi A3.

British Transport Police detectives launched an extensive investigation that linked Downing to all four incidents using CCTV footage, forensic evidence and victim accounts.

Following his arrest in Wolverhampton on 19 April 2025, officers discovered social media videos captured by the defendant showing him driving the stolen cars.

The court heard that despite extensive police efforts, the stolen vehicles have never been recovered.

Following the sentencing, British Transport Police Detective Constable Aaron Murdoch described Downing as a callous and violent offender who deliberately targeted women.

Det Con Murdoch stated that the psychological impact of the offences on the victims should not be underestimated and confirmed that detectives reviewed hundreds of hours of CCTV footage to build an overwhelming case against the teenager.
