A man has been convicted of terrorism offences after sharing propaganda glorifying Daesh and acts of terrorism on social media. Hamza Alam, 22, from Romford, East London, claimed to be an 'online librarian' during police interviews. However, an investigation by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command revealed his involvement in a Telegram channel where he shared terrorist publications promoting Jihad.

Detective Chief Superintendent Gareth Rees, Head of Operations for the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, stated, “Alam insisted that he was simply an ‘online librarian’, providing a service to the public by sharing this material. That was not the case - by sharing violent and extreme terrorist publications, he is now a terrorist offender and faces a significant jail sentence.”

Alam was found guilty on three counts of disseminating terrorist publications and one count of encouraging terrorism. He celebrated the 9/11 bombers and promoted extreme violence on social media. Initially arrested in June 2022, he was later charged in March 2023 and again in September 2023.

Alam's sentencing is scheduled for Friday, 21 June at Woolwich Crown Court. Remember, communities play a vital role in countering terrorism. If you suspect terrorist activity, report it confidentially at www.gov.uk/act or call the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321. In emergencies, dial 999.
