The adjustment from substantial to severe indicates that an assessment by security officials deems a terrorist attack in the country to be highly likely.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed the escalation on Thursday, describing the recent events in north London as a vile act of terrorism.
The Home Office stated that while the increase follows the recent violence, it also reflects a longer-term rise in threats from Islamist and extreme right-wing ideologies.

Under the severe threat classification, the second-highest of five levels, an attack is judged to be highly likely within the next six-month period.
Government officials highlighted a backdrop of increased state-linked physical threats that have contributed to a heightened risk of violence against the Jewish community.
In response to the heightened assessment, the government has announced record funding for policing and security at synagogues, schools, and community centres.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, the head of counter-terrorism policing, confirmed that security measures for all public events nationwide are currently under review.

The review includes planned demonstrations such as the Nakba Day march scheduled to take place in London on 16 May.
Policing teams are working with local forces to ensure appropriate protective security mitigations are implemented for large-scale gatherings.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police while the heightened state of alert remains in place.
The national security services continue to monitor domestic and international developments to inform further adjustments to the threat level as required.
