Edinburgh man accused of supermarket knife attack and multiple life-threatening assaults is remanded in custody as prosecutors pursue two attempted murder charges.
A man accused of attempting to kill two people during a series of alleged knife attacks in Edinburgh has been fully committed for trial after making a further appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
Mustafa Kokoneh, 23, appeared during a private hearing on Thursday in connection with eight charges arising from incidents in the Calders area of the city earlier this month. He made no plea during the procedural hearing and was remanded in custody after the court committed him for trial on indictment.
Kokoneh faces two charges of attempted murder, alongside two further allegations of life-threatening assault. The indictment also includes charges of breach of the peace, possession of knives, possession of weapons, and destroying or damaging property.
Prosecutors allege the offences occurred during a series of incidents on the morning of Monday, 2 March 2026 in the Calders district of Edinburgh.
According to the charges, Kokoneh is alleged to have attempted to murder a woman inside a supermarket. It is claimed she attempted to hide while the accused moved through the store and caused damage within the premises.
The indictment further alleges that during the incident he struck the woman on the head with a glass bottle and acted in a manner which prosecutors say was intended to kill her.
He is also accused of attempting to murder a man during the same sequence of events by repeatedly striking him with a knife.
In addition to the attempted murder allegations, the accused faces two charges of carrying out assaults said to have been life-threatening.
Prosecutors further claim that Kokoneh attempted to attack another man with a knife and that he threw cans at a third male, allegedly placing his life in danger.
The court heard previously that police officers were deployed to the area after reports of a man armed with a knife. Armed officers attended and an operational response was launched as the incidents unfolded.
Kokoneh was detained following the incidents after police brought the situation under control.
Emergency services attended the scene and two people were taken to hospital for treatment to injuries sustained during the events.
The accused first appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on 4 March 2026, when the charges were outlined in court. On that occasion he made no plea and was remanded in custody.
During Thursday’s hearing, the case proceeded by way of a full committal, a procedural stage in Scottish solemn proceedings which formally sends the case forward for trial before a higher court.
Kokoneh again made no plea to the charges.
Sheriff Court officials confirmed he was fully committed for trial and remanded in custody pending further proceedings.
A preliminary hearing date will be fixed in due course as the case progresses through the Scottish criminal court process.
