Ibrahim Albashir Jailed for 25 Years Over Frenzied Leeds Broken Bottle Attack

A 34-year-old man of no fixed abode has been sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment and given an indefinite hospital order after carrying out a frenzied attack on a lone woman in Leeds. Ibrahim Albashir, who is originally from Sudan, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court by Judge Robin Mairs.

The court heard that Albashir grabbed the 32-year-old victim in a stranglehold from behind and stabbed her as many as 30 times with a broken glass bottle. The horrific incident unfolded on Otley Road opposite The Original Oak pub shortly after 9 pm on 17 March 2024 as the woman was walking home from a meal out.

Security staff working at the pub heard the victim's blood-curdling screams and rushed to intervene. The doormen knocked Albashir unconscious to stop the ferocious and sustained assault before detaining him and providing initial medical treatment to the victim until paramedics arrived.

Emergency services transported the woman to hospital for immediate treatment for lacerations to her neck, chest, head and hands. Judge Mairs noted that it was by good fortune alone that the woman escaped with relatively minor physical injuries but highlighted that her mental scars would be profound and lifelong. In a personal victim statement, the woman described how walking past the location fills her with panic and dread and that the attack has completely changed how she lives her life.

During the sentencing hearing, consultant forensic psychiatrist Lucy Bacon confirmed that all medical experts agree Albashir suffers from catatonic schizophrenia. Judge Mairs explained that the defendant will be detained indefinitely in a secure mental hospital and if he ever recovers he will be transferred to a prison to serve the remainder of his 25-year sentence.

The court was told that Albashir arrived in the United Kingdom from Calais having used the services of people smugglers. He had previously lived in Sudan until he was 25 before travelling through Libya and Italy to France, where he spent time in a mental hospital and was eventually refused asylum. The defendant then resided in Luton, Coventry and Birmingham before staying in a hostel in Barrow-in-Furness. He reportedly arrived in Leeds after being thrown off a train travelling from Manchester to York for failing to produce a ticket.

The judge raised significant concerns regarding Albashir's sexual conduct, referencing a previous sexual assault in a Birmingham hotel, an incident involving a staff member while he was detained in hospital and an occasion where he exposed himself to a doctor. Judge Mairs told the defendant that choosing to attack a lone female was of significance and concluded that there was a common-sense conclusion of a sexual element to the attack.

It was also revealed that two days before the attack in Headingley, police had stopped Albashir after finding him with his trousers around his ankles in a trance-like state, but he was released with no further action taken. Defending counsel Katherine Robinson stated that the offence would not have occurred had her client not been experiencing a psychotic episode.

Detective Inspector Richard James of West Yorkshire Police's Leeds CID praised the bravery of the security staff who rushed to the victim's aid. He stated that without their intervention the incident could very easily have become a murder investigation.

The detective added that violence against women and girls will not be tolerated and expressed hope that the conviction will help the victim find some form of closure following the truly awful chapter of her life. Albashir appeared via video link from the hospital for the hearing and remains detained indefinitely under the hospital order.
