Gurvinder Johal named as victim in Derby bank stabbing — two arrests made

Police have made two arrests following the fatal stabbing of a man inside a Lloyds Bank in Derby city centre.

The victim has been named locally as Gurvinder Singh Johal, a well-known businessman from West Bromwich. Mr Johal, known as Danny, was attacked inside the St Peter’s Street branch shortly after 2.30pm on Tuesday (6 May). He died at the scene.

A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of murder. A second man, in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both were detained at a house in Western Road, Normanton, just before 6pm and remain in custody.

Mr Johal, aged in his 30s, ran the Hen and Chickens Bar and Grill in Derby and was the son of the owner of the Hen and Chickens restaurant in Hill Top, West Bromwich. He also held directorships in several Midlands-based leisure and property businesses.

A large section of the city centre remains cordoned off, with officers from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit leading the investigation.

Detective Inspector Tony Owen said: “We know this incident will have caused shock and concern. Our investigation is moving quickly, and we’d urge anyone with information to come forward.”

Lloyds Bank said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened by the incident at our Derby branch. Our thoughts are with those affected, and we are supporting our colleagues while fully cooperating with police.”
