A 22-year-old man from Southall has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years at the Old Bailey for the murder of 21-year-old university student Anojan Gnaneswaran at Strawberry Hill station in Twickenham.

Dino Donaldson, of Caxton Road, was convicted of murder by a unanimous verdict following a retrial, alongside charges of possessing a bladed article and conspiracy to possess Class A drugs.

Passing sentence, Her Honour Judge Angela Rafferty KC detailed how the violence unfolded shortly after midnight on 9 January 2024 on Platform 2 of the south-west London railway station.

An initial interaction between two groups of young men over an arranged drug exchange—involving 50 pounds for ten MDMA tablets—escalated into a confrontation after the victim's brother, Ashvin Gnaneswaran, and friends arrived at the location.

When members of Donaldson's group were challenged and asked to identify themselves, Donaldson produced a knife from his waistband.

The court heard that Donaldson launched a sudden and merciless attack, inflicting two deep, penetrating stab wounds.

The fatal chest injury measured 12.5 centimetres in depth, cutting the victim's ribs and piercing his heart. A second wound to the lower right flank and abdomen reached a depth of up to 13.5 centimetres, with the pathologist noting evidence of blade movement, partial withdrawal and reinsertion.

When the victim attempted to escape onto the tracks, Donaldson pursued him and delivered a final, deliberate stab wound to the chest while the student lay defenceless on the ground. The victim sustained no defensive injuries, and forensic evidence confirmed he had no time to react to the burst of violence.

Following the attack, Donaldson fled the scene, disposing of the murder weapon in a tree and discarding other items along his escape route. Less than an hour after the killing, he was captured on CCTV on an N87 night bus smiling and laughing. Audio from a doorbell camera later recorded him bragging about the attack, stating:

"I stabbed him through the back bro, I stabbed him fully. I watched it and I felt it go in him, yeah."

Police arrested Donaldson three days later after discovering him hiding in a cupboard at his Southall home, where officers also recovered 74 wraps of crack and heroin with a street value exceeding 1,000 pounds.

Victim impact statements read to the court described Anojan Gnaneswaran as an exceptional son, brother, and academic talent studying accounting and finance, who also held a first-dan black belt in karate and competed internationally. His brother Ashvin, who witnessed the fatal stabbing, attempted desperate CPR at the scene until paramedics arrived.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Rafferty noted that the statutory starting point for the minimum term was 25 years because Donaldson brought the knife to the scene.

This was increased to 27 years to account for aggravating factors, including the public location at a railway station, the disposal of evidence, and the fact that Donaldson was on bail at the time for Class A drug offences.

However, the judge applied significant mitigation based on Donaldson's youth—being 19 at the time of the offence—alongside a background marked by severe disadvantage, time spent in care, ADHD, PTSD, and a brutal upbringing with minimal parental guidance.

Donaldson was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years, reduced by the 997 days already spent on remand. Concurrent sentences, including six years for the knife offence, were imposed, with no separate penalty issued for the drug conspiracy.
