A Birmingham man has been jailed for 26 years after being convicted of the attempted murder of his wife, whom he attacked with scalding oil and a red-hot pan during a sustained assault at the family home.
Raju Mollah, 50, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, 24 April 2026, after a jury found him guilty of attempted murder following trial. He was also convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent. An indefinite restraining order was imposed, barring any contact with his wife, Mosammed Mumtaz, and their youngest children.
The court heard that Mollah and Mrs Mumtaz, his wife of 23 years, had been in the process of divorcing following a dispute over property in Bangladesh. Tensions had remained high at their home in Heather Road, Small Heath, in the days leading up to the attack on 12 January 2025.
On the evening of the incident, Mrs Mumtaz was in the kitchen preparing food when Mollah placed an unusually large quantity of oil into the frying pan she was heating.

As she turned away to wash a utensil, with her back to him, Mollah grabbed her by the hair and poured the hot oil over her head and face.
He then repeatedly struck her to the head and face with the frying pan and the metal frame from the gas cooker.
When she fell to the floor, the attack continued. The court heard he stamped on her, kicked her multiple times and rammed a mop into her face, covering her nose and mouth, while she remained conscious throughout.
Paramedics who attended found Mrs Mumtaz lying in a pool of hot oil with blood around her head. She suffered severe burns to her face, neck, arms and hands, some penetrating all layers of skin, together with a nasal fracture, damaged and missing teeth, cuts and swelling to the head, singed hair and a minor brain bleed.

Sentencing, Judge Richard Bond told Mollah: “You calmly picked up the pan and poured the burning hot oil over her head.
“You then picked up a red hot skillet from the gas ring on the stove and put it on her face with the intention of burning her skin… almost as if you were branding her.”
He added: “You have permanently disfigured your wife’s face and body.”
In her victim personal statement, Mrs Mumtaz said: “He has destroyed my life, my family and my face.”

Mollah, who had no previous convictions, initially claimed the incident was an accident and later falsely asserted self-defence in police interview.
He must serve 17 years and four months in custody before becoming eligible for release on licence.
