Blind Woman’s Home Entered by Migrant

In the vicinity of the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf, an alleged incident has occurred in which a man, said by residents to be an asylum seeker recently arrived in the United Kingdom and staying at a nearby Britannia migrant processing hotel, was reportedly discovered inside the home of a blind woman.

Her 22-year-old relative, who also acts as her carer, confronted the man and chased him from the property, stating their actions were solely to protect their relative, who is vulnerable and unable to see.

Several witnesses told Video Production News affiliate staff camerman A Y Audits, who was live at the scene, that the man was escorted from the area by police and taken to another location. Residents questioned why no arrest on suspicion of burglary was made, noting that under UK law, entering a dwelling without permission can constitute burglary even if nothing is taken. Officers declined to confirm whether an arrest had taken place, with several residents alleging they were informed the matter was being treated as trespass rather than burglary.

Instead of making an arrest at the scene, instead the police imposed a Section 35 dispersal order, giving officers the power to remove people from the area for up to 48 hours if they believed antisocial behaviour was likely. Video Production News affiliate cameraman and journalist A Y Audits attended the location and, while not filming the incident itself, obtained an interview with the visually impaired woman’s relative recounting the confrontation.

During the incident, A Y Audits was approached by officers, questioned, and instructed to leave under threat of arrest, despite making clear that he was attending on assignment for Video Production News. Although he did not have his press card with him, police could have readily verified his credentials by contacting the editorial desk, where confirmation could have been provided immediately. No such verification was sought.

Outside the Britannia Hotel, residents from a range of ethnic backgrounds gathered to demand answers, emphasising their concerns related to safety in the home. Uniformed officers did not disclose further details regarding the suspect’s status.

Residents at the scene asserted that if the situation had been reversed, and a local person had entered another’s property, immediate arrest and detention would have followed. They maintained that an incident involving a visually impaired and recently hospitalised woman warranted prompt investigative action.

The matter now rests with the Metropolitan Police and, if the allegation of unlawful entry is substantiated, with the Crown Prosecution Service to determine whether an offence such as burglary has been committed. In the meantime, questions remain over the consistency of law enforcement and the safeguarding of vulnerable individuals in similar circumstances.

In a further shocking development to this case, the 22-year-old relative of the blind woman, who earlier told Video Production News she had confronted and chased the alleged intruder from the property, has now been arrested on suspicion of common assault against a security guard, possession of an offensive weapon, affray, possession of Class B drugs and assault on an emergency worker - Police have confirmed the arrest to Video Production News but declined to provide further detail while enquiries continue.
