Peterborough Man Jailed After Violent Abduction, Death Threats & High-Speed Police Pursuit

A man who forced his partner into a car before leading police on a dangerous pursuit through Peterborough, during which he threatened that he would arrange any crash so would that she would die first, has been jailed for six years.

False imprisonment and dangerous driving offender Aamir Mahmood, 33, of Huntly Grove, Peterborough, was sentenced at Peterborough Crown Court on 17 July after admitting both offences arising from the incident on 5 February this year. He was also disqualified from driving.

The court heard Mahmood approached the victim in Thorpe Road at about 3pm and attempted to persuade her to get into his Volkswagen Golf. When she refused and tried to leave, he grabbed both of her hands, dragged her to the vehicle and forced her into the front passenger seat against her will.

A nearby resident heard the victim screaming and went to the car to check on her welfare. When the witness asked if she was all right, the victim replied that she was not. Mahmood told the resident she was fine before driving away.

Police were alerted and firearms officers located the Volkswagen Golf in Princes Street about 20 minutes later. Officers signalled for the vehicle to stop, but Mahmood accelerated away, triggering a pursuit through residential streets.

During the chase, Mahmood told the victim that if they crashed he would “drive into a wall on your side so you die first”.

The pursuit involved dangerous overtaking manoeuvres on narrow roads, with Mahmood coming close to colliding with another vehicle. Officers briefly lost sight of the Golf before locating it after it had crashed with another car at the junction of Park Road and Princes Street.

Mahmood fled from the driver’s side of the crashed vehicle but was pursued on foot by a police officer and arrested a short time later. The victim sustained minor injuries and was taken to Peterborough City Hospital for treatment.

Sentencing Mahmood to six years’ imprisonment, the court also imposed a driving disqualification following his guilty pleas to false imprisonment and dangerous driving.

Detective Constable Joshua Crown, who led the investigation, said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim, who was forcibly taken against her will and was then powerless as Mahmood put her at great risk by driving so dangerously.

“Mahmood selfishly showed a complete disregard for her safety, the safety of other road users and the officers trying to stop him.

“Thanks to the swift actions of witnesses and responding officers, he was quickly brought into custody and has now faced the consequences of his actions.”
