Michael Thompson Guilty of Rape & Murder After Staging Estranged Wife’s Death as Suicide
Years of alleged coercive control, a bitter separation, financial disputes & a carefully staged cover-up unravelled during a six-week Crown Court trial.
A man has been convicted of the rape and murder of his estranged wife after a jury rejected his account that she had taken her own life and found he deliberately staged the scene to resemble a suicide.
Michael Thompson, 56, was found guilty at Nottingham Crown Court of raping and murdering Kimberley Thompson, 43, at the Northampton home where the former couple continued to live despite separating two years earlier. He was also convicted of two counts of perverting the course of justice, relating to attempts to conceal both the rape and the murder.
The convictions followed a six-week trial during which prosecutors alleged Thompson suffocated his estranged wife in her bedroom before arranging the room to suggest she had died by suicide. The court heard he surrounded her body with empty pill packets, bottles of vodka and gin and family photographs, posted messages on her social media accounts in her name and later called the East Midlands Ambulance Service at about 5.30am, presenting her death as self-inflicted.
Jurors heard the couple had been married for 19 years but, although their divorce was nearing completion, continued living under the same roof in Pinewood Road, Northampton, with separate bedrooms while financial matters arising from the divorce remained unresolved.

The prosecution said that sometime between midnight and 3.30am on 9 August last year Thompson entered Kimberley Thompson’s bedroom, raped her and manually suffocated her before beginning an elaborate attempt to conceal what had happened.
His account to police was that the couple had engaged in consensual sex before he later discovered his wife unresponsive. The Crown contended that the medical, forensic and circumstantial evidence demonstrated that version of events was false.
The court heard a post-mortem examination found no evidence that Kimberley Thompson had consumed alcohol before her death. Instead, pathologists identified only low levels of caffeine, paracetamol and codeine in her body, findings which prosecutors said were inconsistent with the scene Thompson had created to suggest she had taken an overdose while heavily intoxicated.
Evidence during the trial showed that family members and friends quickly questioned whether Kimberley Thompson had taken her own life. Prosecutors said social media posts published shortly before her body was discovered contained spelling mistakes and language that those closest to her considered uncharacteristic, alleging they had been written by Thompson as part of his efforts to disguise the crimes.

The jury heard extensive evidence that Kimberley Thompson had endured years of domestic abuse throughout the marriage, including controlling and coercive behaviour and physical violence. She had contacted a domestic abuse support service in 2013 but later withdrew her complaint because she feared the consequences of reporting what was happening.
By the time of her death, prosecutors said she had begun rebuilding her life following the separation. She had started a new relationship, was making plans to move out of the property and had been arranging flights to visit her daughter, who was studying in the United States.
The Crown alleged Thompson became increasingly resentful after discovering his estranged wife’s new relationship and amid continuing financial disputes connected with the divorce settlement.
Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison, who led the East Midlands Special Operations Unit investigation, said: “It became clear throughout our investigation that Kim had been subjected to domestic abuse for much of her relationship with Thompson, with manipulation, coercive control, and physical violence the norm.”

She added: “Over the years Thompson stripped Kim’s confidence away but in the time since their separation, friends and family began to see the old Kim re-emerging with a renewed enthusiasm for life.”
Referring to Thompson’s actions after the killing, DCI Harrison said: “Not only did Thompson rape and murder Kim, he took the time to stage her death in order to make people believe she had committed suicide before calling for help.”
A formal murder investigation was launched on 12 August after officers received information challenging the initial appearance of suicide. Thompson was subsequently arrested and charged.
After deliberating for just over two days, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts for rape, murder and two counts of perverting the course of justice, concluding that Thompson had not only killed his estranged wife but had attempted to conceal the offences by staging a false suicide scene.
