Bus Theft Suspect Ali Balhad Remanded Over Telford Hijacking Charges

An asylum seeker accused of assaulting a bus driver, hijacking his single-decker bus and crashing it into a row of parked cars during a spree of offending has been remanded in custody by magistrates.

Ali Balhad, 33, of no fixed abode, appeared in absentia before Telford Magistrates' Court on Monday facing a total of ten charges spanning three separate incidents between 16 and 18 September.

The court heard that the defendant, a Yemeni national, entered the United Kingdom illegally on 2 May and had been present in the Telford area for approximately a week prior to his arrest. The preliminary hearing was overseen by Deputy District Judge Micaila Williams, who appeared via video link from Kidderminster Magistrates' Court. Balhad was not asked to enter formal pleas to any of the charges and was remanded in secure custody to appear before Shrewsbury Crown Court on 19 October.

Seven of the ten charges relate directly to a major incident that unfolded on Court Street in Madeley, Telford, at approximately 18:30 BST on Friday. The Crown alleges that Balhad boarded the single-decker public transport vehicle, assaulted the driver and unlawfully seized control of the bus. The prosecution outlined that the vehicle was subsequently driven dangerously along Park Way towards the High Street, where it struck a row of parked vehicles before finally coming to a halt. The charges arising from the alleged bus hijacking include aggravated vehicle taking, robbery, attempted grievous bodily harm, assault, driving a motor vehicle dangerously and three counts of criminal damage.

The court was informed that the remaining charges on the prosecution's charge sheet stem from two earlier incidents in the local area. Balhad faces two charges—specifically threats to kill and assault on an emergency worker—relating to an event on 16 September, alongside a further charge of theft from a store in connection with an incident on 17 September. Prosecutors allege that the three-day crime spree demonstrated an escalating pattern of criminal behaviour culminating in the violent seizure of the commercial vehicle.

West Mercia Police confirmed that the bus driver was fortunate not to suffer serious physical injury during the ordeal, receiving assessment and treatment from paramedics at the scene. In the aftermath of the collision, police praised members of the public who courageously rushed to the driver's assistance. Local civic leaders also responded to the violent disruption, with Telford MP Shaun Davis praising the driver's composure and Lee Carter, the leader of Telford and Wrekin Council, expressing shock and sadness at the incident. An online fundraising campaign established to support the bus driver and the witnesses who intervened to help him has already raised more than £6,000. All matters concerning Balhad remain Crown allegations until he enters formal pleas at the Crown Court next month.
