The woman was being driven home after a night out in Coventry in December 2022 when Wahab stopped the taxi, got into the back of the car and sexually assaulted her.
Wahab denied the offence, claiming that his memory was poor and someone else may have been using his cab that evening. However, various evidence, including mobile phone location data linked him to the scene and secured a conviction.
Wahab now begins a three year prison sentence and will be on the Sex Offender’s Register for life.
The Crime: Sexual Assault
Under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, sexual assault is defined as intentionally touching another person in a sexual manner without their consent, where the perpetrator does not reasonably believe consent was given. In this case, Wahab stopped his taxi during the journey, entered the back seat, and assaulted the victim. Such behavior constitutes a severe breach of trust, particularly as taxi drivers are relied upon to provide safe transportation, especially late at night.
The Sentence: 3 Years in Prison
Sentencing guidelines for sexual assault consider factors such as the abuse of a position of trust, the level of harm caused to the victim, and whether the offender demonstrates remorse or accepts responsibility. In Wahab’s case, his denial of the offence and the circumstances of the crime contributed to the custodial sentence.

Placement on the Sex Offender’s Register for life is a critical measure to protect the public. Wahab will face restrictions on his behavior, reporting obligations, and limitations on certain activities to reduce the risk of reoffending.
