Mike Amesburyhas formallyresigned as the MP for Runcorn and Helsby, writing toChancellor Rachel Reevesto confirm his departure. His decision comes after he wasconvicted ofassaulting a constituent, for which he was initially jailed before winning an appeal thatsuspended his sentence.

Aby-electionwill now be held to replace him, althoughvoters were always going to have their say. Even ifAmesbury had not resigned, his conviction made him subject to arecall petition, which, if successful, would have triggered aby-election. However, his resignation has now sped up the timeline.
This contest will be akey test for Reform UK, who camesecond in the seat last yearbut are now facinginternal turmoil following the Rupert Lowe scandal. The by-election will be atest of Reform’s ability to capitaliseon discontent with themajor parties.
