Michael Thompson Jailed for Life for the Rape and Murder of Kimberley Thompson
Michael Thompson, 56, has been jailed for 33 Years for Wife's Rape and Staged Suicide.
A man who raped and murdered his estranged wife before staging a scene to make it appear as though she had taken her own life has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 33 years.
Michael Thompson, 56, was convicted following a seven-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court, which heard extensive details of the decades of domestic abuse he inflicted upon 43-year-old Kimberley Thompson.
The court was told that throughout their 19-year marriage, he subjected his wife to controlling, coercive behaviour and physical violence.
Although the couple had been separated for two years, they continued to reside at the same Northampton address while using separate bedrooms. Jurors heard that Ms Thompson was actively planning to move on with her life as the finalisation of their divorce approached.

The fatal attack occurred in the early hours of August 9 last year. Thompson entered his estranged wife's bedroom, where he raped and suffocated her.
In a calculated attempt to evade justice, he subsequently staged the scene, surrounding her lifeless body with tablets and bottles of alcohol to falsely present her death as a suicide. He initially claimed to investigators that the pair had engaged in consensual sex before he later discovered her deceased.
Thompson's deception was completely dismantled by medical evidence. A post-mortem examination of Ms Thompson found absolutely no evidence of alcohol in her system, alongside only negligible trace levels of caffeine, paracetamol, and codeine.
Following the presentation of this evidence, a jury unanimously convicted Thompson on July 8 of rape, murder, and two counts of perverting the course of justice.

In a notable absence, Thompson refused to attend his final sentencing hearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday.
His defence barrister, Jonas Hankin KC, confirmed to the court that the defendant was "voluntarily absent." Addressing the empty dock in front of a packed public gallery, Judge Nirmal Shant KC severely condemned his actions and lack of remorse.
The judge noted that throughout the trial, Thompson sat in the dock shaking his head and making audible noises of dissent. She described his refusal to attend the sentencing as the "ultimate act of cowardice and contempt," highlighting his unwillingness to face the family and hear of the profound grief he had caused them.
Speaking after the guilty verdicts were delivered last week, Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison detailed the horrific abuse Ms Thompson endured over a two-decade period.

DCI Harrison stated that the investigation made it clear that manipulation, coercive control, and physical violence were the norm for much of the victim's relationship with Thompson. The detective added that while Thompson had spent years stripping away her confidence, friends and family had finally begun to see the old Kim re-emerging with a renewed enthusiasm for life in the time since their separation.
