Susan Ioannou was discovered dead in her Church Street home on the evening of February 21, 2022. The post-mortem examination revealed that she had suffered severe head and chest injuries, as well as neck compression, indicating a violent assault involving strangulation, stomping, and multiple heavy blows to the face.
The investigation revealed that Omar had befriended Susan, exploiting her kindness to support her drug addiction. Detective Inspector Jim Barry stated, “Susan was kind and generous, supporting those around her, even though she had little. One of those she helped was Omar, who wanted more and violently killed Susan whilst she was in her place of safety, her home.”
CCTV footage and witness statements enabled detectives to trace Omar’s movements to Susan’s home the night before she was found dead. Omar had stolen Susan’s phone and later contacted several people, asking them to check on Susan, suggesting that “something may have happened” to her.
Omar was arrested on suspicion of murder on February 22, 2022, and charged with the offense on February 26, 2023.
