Former PE Teacher Bronwen James Remanded Over Sexual Abuse of Three Pupils
Former physical education teacher Bronwen James, 30, has been remanded in custody following her conviction for grooming and sexually abusing three teenage students.
A former physical education teacher who exploited her position of authority to groom and sexually abuse three teenage students has been remanded in custody ahead of a lengthy custodial sentence.
Bronwen James, 30, with a date of birth of 20 December 1995 and residing in Chippenham, Wiltshire, faced proceedings across multiple courts for a sustained pattern of predatory behaviour.
Following a trial at Winchester Crown Court she was found guilty by a jury of three counts of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust. The trial verdict followed 12 hours of jury deliberations which also saw the defendant cleared of one additional count of sexual activity relating to the same victim.
The trial focused on the defendant's grooming of a 16-year-old schoolboy while she was employed at Bitterne Park School in Southampton. Jurors were told that James flirted with the pupil during class before the pair began exchanging messages on the social media platform Snapchat.
Prosecuting barrister Edward Culver outlined how the defendant subsequently arranged to drive the boy to a promenade where they kissed in her vehicle. The court heard that the pair later travelled to her house where they cuddled while watching the Wimbledon tennis championships on television before moving to her bedroom where they engaged in sexual intercourse.
During the inappropriate relationship the former teacher told the teenager that she loved him and wanted him to move away with her.
The illicit relationship was uncovered when another student showed a teacher text messages apparently sent between the defendant and the complainant. Mr Culver informed the court that the communications suggested a highly sexually charged relationship and revealed that the victim was saved in the defendant's phone under the cover name of 'number 8', indicating he was the eighth man she had slept with.
The prosecutor noted that James's photograph was clearly visible on the phone screen. Highlighting her culpability Mr Culver stated that she acted not only in an unprofessional and overfamiliar way but failed to recognise any boundaries by exploiting her position to engage in sexual activity with a young student. In a formal police interview the victim explicitly stated that he had been groomed by the defendant.
It can now be reported that prior to the trial James had already admitted to a string of severe sexual offences against two female pupils. At a hearing at Salisbury Crown Court on 12 August 2026 the defendant pleaded guilty to one count of sexual communication with a child.
She had previously appeared at Winchester Crown Court on 6 January 2026 where she pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of sexual communication with a child and one count of making an indecent photograph of a child. She later admitted a further count of sexual activity with a child on 1 September 2026. These pleas related to two teenage girls who were aged 13 and 14 at the time of the offences.
The court heard that James initially abused her position to engage in sexual communications with a 13-year-old female student at the same Hampshire school attended by the male victim. This offending progressively escalated into a physical sexual relationship when the girl reached 14 years of age.
The defendant later relocated to a different educational institution, Hardenhuish School in Chippenham, Wiltshire, where she commenced a sexual relationship with another 14-year-old female student. Following her initial arrest in August 2023, the defendant went on to commit further offences against one of the students while released on police bail.
During legal arguments, which can now be freely reported, it emerged that early in her teaching career James had received a formal warning while employed at the private Seaford College in West Sussex after giving her personal mobile telephone number to a pupil.
Following the conclusion of the trial James reportedly showed no emotion and looked down as the verdicts were delivered. Senior Crown Prosecutor Bethany Adams from the CPS Wessex Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit stated that the defendant had been trusted to educate and protect children but instead used that trust to groom and sexually abuse three students.
Ms Adams described how James manipulated her victims with calculated precision to isolate them and normalise the abuse, stressing that the offending was not a mere lapse in judgement but a sustained pattern of predatory behaviour.
The prosecutor praised the immense courage shown by the victims in coming forward, noting that their evidence alongside digital messages was instrumental in securing the conviction.
An NSPCC spokesperson echoed these sentiments by highlighting that young people often find it particularly difficult to recognise abuse or speak out when a person in authority violates a trusted relationship, adding that such actions can have a profound and lasting impact on a victim's wellbeing.
The spokesperson emphasised the vital importance of victims knowing they will be listened to and supported regardless of the perpetrator's professional standing. Judge James Bromige has ordered the preparation of comprehensive pre-sentence reports to thoroughly assess the level of danger the defendant poses to the public. James, 30, born 20 December 1995 and of Chippenham, Wiltshire, was remanded into secure custody by the judge and will return to Winchester Crown Court for sentencing on 15 January.
