A 22-year-old man has been jailed for 12 years following a Wolverhampton shooting that left a victim with serious injuries near the city centre.

Tyriq Bingham, of Tangmere Road, Wolverhampton, was sentenced at court after admitting his role in the armed attack which occurred inside a pedestrian subway.

Bingham pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life during a hearing in August.

Emergency services were called to the scene near the Peel Street subway underpass, beneath the A4150, at approximately 3.30pm on 12 October.

Police officers and ambulance personnel attended the location and discovered a 20-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.

The victim was transported to hospital for treatment to serious leg injuries and survived the incident.

An investigation was subsequently launched by the West Midlands Police Major Crime Unit, with detectives reviewing local CCTV footage to establish the events leading up to the shooting.

Enquiries confirmed the discharge of the firearm took place within the subway structure beneath the ring road.

Detectives identified Bingham as the individual responsible for the attack, leading to his arrest later that month.

Following his formal guilty pleas, Bingham was sentenced last Friday, receiving a total term of 12 years' imprisonment.

Detective Constable Joe Harris, of the Major Crime Unit, stated that the incident posed a serious danger to the victim and others in the vicinity, adding that robust action would be taken against those involved in severe violence.
