Two Teenagers Sentenced for Manslaughter of 80-Year-Old Bhim Kohli

Two teens sentenced over deadly attack on 80-year-old Bhim Kohli. Public outrage grows as lenient punishments spark calls for sentence review. Leicester Crown Court has sentenced two teenagers convicted of manslaughter over the death of Bhim Kohli, 80, who was attacked while walking his dog in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town, last September.

The 15-year-old boy was sentenced to seven years in custody. The 13-year-old girl received a three-year youth rehabilitation order with a six-month curfew and community service. Due to their ages, their identities cannot be disclosed. During the sentencing, Mr Justice Turner described the attack as “wicked” and “cowardly,” highlighting the sustained nature of the assault, which lasted seven-and-a-half minutes. The court heard that the boy racially abused Mr Kohli, punched and kicked him, and slapped him with a slider shoe, while the girl encouraged the violence and filmed the assault, laughing throughout. Prosecutor Harpreet Sandhu KC said the attack was premeditated and racially motivated, causing fatal spinal injuries and broken ribs. Despite the boy’s remorse claims, the judge noted his refusal to fully accept responsibility.

The victim’s family expressed anger and disappointment at the sentences, believing they do not reflect the crime’s severity. Mid Leicestershire MP Peter Bedford and South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa have called for a review of the sentences by the Attorney General’s Office.
