A 28-year-old man has been jailed for four years at Basildon Crown Court after carrying out a sustained knife attack following a break-in at his Southend residence.
The defendant, Nathan Bowes a Jamaican national who has resided in the United Kingdom since childhood, was sentenced after admitting to the wounding of two individuals during a confrontation that escalated into the street.
The court heard that the incident began when the Bowes was awoken by an armed intruder attempting to commit a robbery or burglary within his flat.
While the defendant initially succeeded in disarming the intruder, the prosecution established that the subsequent violence constituted a prolonged and uncontrolled assault.
Footage captured by a neighbour showed Bowes chasing the intruder after he fled the property and fell in the street.
The victim was subjected to multiple slash wounds to his face, hands, and back, alongside a series of kicks and punches delivered while he was on the ground.
A second individual who arrived at the scene to provide assistance was also stabbed in the leg by Bowes during the height of the disturbance.
Both victims required surgical intervention for their injuries, though the court noted that neither party provided assistance to the police during the subsequent investigation.
The sentencing judge acknowledged the significant provocation caused by the initial home intrusion but ruled that the use of force was excessive and far beyond the scope of reasonable self-defence.
It was determined that the immediate threat to Bowes had ceased once the intruder had fled the flat, rendering the outdoor assault a retaliatory action.
In mitigation, the defence highlighted Bowes traumatic personal history, including experiences of childhood abuse, neglect, and exploitation by criminal gangs within the care system.
The prosecution pointed to a substantial criminal record involving multiple previous convictions for offences including robbery and the possession of bladed articles.
Under current legislation, the custodial term of four years triggers a consideration for automatic deportation proceedings by the Home Office upon the conclusion of the sentence.
Bowes will serve at least half of his prison sentence in custody before being eligible for release on licence under the strict supervision of the probation service.
