A 17-year-old boy has acknowledged guilt in the manslaughter of schoolgirl Elianne Andam during a court appearance at the Old Bailey. However, he maintains his innocence on the charge of murder, denying the accusations against him.
Elianne, a 15-year-old student, tragically lost her life after being fatally stabbed while on her way to school in Croydon, South London. Reports suggest that the assailant brandished what appeared to be a large zombie knife during the attack, which actually turned out to be a large kitchen knife in reality.
The teenage defendant, whose identity remains protected due to his age, made his plea via videolink during proceedings at the Old Bailey on Thursday morning. Prosecutors did not accept the manslaughter plea, and as a result, a trial has been scheduled to commence on November 25 at the same court. Additionally, the defendant denied the charge of possessing a blade in a public place.
The harrowing incident unfolded on September 27 as Elianne walked to school alongside two female friends. Allegedly, the attacker, donning a mask and gloves, swiftly retrieved a large knife from his waistband and inflicted multiple stab wounds on Elianne before fleeing the scene. Despite efforts by bystanders to administer aid, Elianne succumbed to her injuries.
The defendant was apprehended in New Addington at 9:45 am on the same day of the attack. Prosecutor Alison Morgan KC described the assault as “a brutal attack” during earlier court proceedings. A post-mortem examination revealed that Elianne had sustained numerous stab wounds.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Elianne’s mother, Dorcas Andam, expressed profound grief and paid tribute to her daughter’s vibrant spirit. Addressing a gathering, including prominent figures like Rapper Stormzy, at the site of the incident, Ms. Andam fondly remembered Elianne as an “amazing, beautiful” soul who cherished life to the fullest.
She lamented the loss of her daughter’s promising future, remarking on the absence of milestones such as planning for prom and pursuing a career in law. Elianne’s family also issued a heartfelt statement, emphasizing her kindness, intelligence, and devout faith.
As legal proceedings unfold, the community continues to mourn the loss of Elianne Andam, reflecting on the profound impact of her untimely passing and the enduring memory of her beautiful soul.
