Two men have been jailed for more than 38 years after a man was shot with a sawn-off shotgun in a car park in Smethwick.

Tyjon Cogger, 23, and Saabir Mohamed, 26, were convicted of firearms offences after the victim, a man in his 20s, was shot in the leg at Cape Hill Retail Park on 23 October 2023.

The victim was dropped off at Birmingham’s City Hospital by associates in an Audi with gunshot wounds to his lower leg and foot. He refused to speak to police, but detectives traced the Audi’s movements on CCTV, leading them back to the scene of the shooting.

Footage showed the Audi entering the car park alongside another vehicle, shortly before a Ford Kuga—driven by Cogger—arrived. The Kuga had been circling the area without an obvious destination, and police believe its occupants were searching for the victim and his associates.

CCTV captured Mohamed stepping out of the Kuga and firing twice with a sawn-off shotgun.

Detectives examined hours of CCTV footage and telecommunications data to identify the suspects. Cogger, of Church Avenue, Amblecote, Dudley, and Mohamed, of Thomas Crescent, Smethwick, were later arrested and charged.

Cogger was sentenced to 18 years and six months, while Mohamed received 20 years and eight months.

Detective Inspector Francis Nock, from the Major Crime Unit, said: “Officers worked extremely hard to piece together what happened and spent hundreds of hours reviewing CCTV footage.

“It is down to their hard work that we identified Cogger and Mohamed and brought them to justice. These men are dangerous and are now rightfully behind bars, making our streets a safer place.”

Under UK law, the use of firearms in violent crime carries severe penalties. Sentencing guidelines consider factors such as intent, harm caused, and whether the weapon was discharged. For offences involving sawn-off shotguns, courts impose lengthy prison terms due to the high risk to public safety.

Judges refer to the Sentencing Council’s guidelines to ensure consistency while allowing for aggravating or mitigating factors. The sentences handed down in this case indicate the offences fell into the upper category of gravity, reflecting the deliberate use of a firearm in a public place. Cases involving organised crime or premeditated attacks typically attract the heaviest penalties.
