Fatal Stabbing of Ian Wright’s Boxing Trainer: Court Hears of Violent Confrontation Outside Richmond Nightclub
A 34-year-old man stands accused of murdering the boxing trainer of football legend Ian Wright by stabbing him in the neck with a shard of broken glass. The Old Bailey has heard that the defendant, Ross Hamilton, had been acting aggressively throughout the night, threatening clubgoers and engaging in violent behavior before the fatal incident occurred.
The victim, Reece Newcombe, aged 31, was a well-known boxing coach who had trained celebrities, including Ian Wright, for a high-profile charity boxing match in 2014. Newcombe was fatally wounded during a violent altercation in the early hours of November 26, 2022, on Richmond Bridge in south-west London.
According to Prosecutor Louis Mably KC, the confrontation was driven by “intoxicated aggression,” with Hamilton allegedly initiating the violence by arming himself with a piece of broken glass. Earlier in the night, Newcombe had been at a local fan zone watching England play the USA in a World Cup match before heading to Viva nightclub in Richmond, where he spent the evening with friends.
The prosecution claims that Hamilton, who was described as bald and aggressive, had been causing disturbances inside the nightclub, performing karate kicks on the dance floor and threatening patrons. His erratic behavior continued as the venue closed, allegedly provoking confrontations with clubgoers outside.
Mably told the jury, “The defendant was spoiling for a fight, confronting people and goading them into following him down an alleyway. He said:
‘I will ju-jitsu the f*** out of you.’”
Tragically, Newcombe became involved in the altercation just before 4 a.m. It was at this point that Hamilton, already armed with the glass shard, fatally stabbed him in the neck. Despite efforts by Newcombe’s friends to assist him, the injuries proved fatal.
The court heard that Hamilton later handed himself over to police following the attack. Mably emphasized that this was not a case of self-defense, stating, “The sad reality is that this fight should never have occurred. The defendant armed himself with a weapon, and the violence that ensued was driven by intoxicated rage.”
Ross Hamilton, of Isleworth, west London, denies charges of murder, assault by beating, and possession of an offensive weapon. The trial continues at the Old Bailey.
