Predator Obinwa Obichukwu, Jailed for Repeatedly Assaulting Lone Woman at Euston Station

A 45-year-old man who shamelessly claimed that his persistent sexual assaults of a lone female commuter at a busy London transport hub were entirely consensual has been jailed for two years.

Obinwa Obichukwu, of Armstrong Close, Hertfordshire, appeared at Inner London Crown Court for sentencing following an investigation by the British Transport Police. A jury previously rejected his defence and found him guilty of two counts of sexual assault following a trial.

The court heard that the harrowing series of events unfolded on the evening of August 20, 2023, as the victim walked towards Euston station. Obichukwu initially targeted the lone woman by approaching her on the street and attempting to strike up a conversation about the music she was listening to through her headphones.

Without her consent, the defendant escalated his intrusion by putting his arm around her shoulder and brazenly inviting her back to his home.

As the victim continued walking down Euston Road to escape his unwanted advances, Obichukwu grabbed hold of her hand and repeatedly proclaimed his "love" for her.

The situation turned physical as the victim reached the main entrance of the station, where Obichukwu physically prevented her from entering the building and carried out the first of his sexual assaults.

Undeterred by her efforts to get away, the victim hurried down the escalators toward the London Underground platform lines. Obichukwu aggressively pursued her down the moving stairs and launched into a second sexual assault near the subterranean ticket barriers.

Faced with the terrifying ordeal, the victim managed to muster the strength to push her attacker away and flee to safety, leaving the predator behind at the station. She promptly reported the attacks to the authorities, triggering a swift and thorough investigation by British Transport Police officers.

Detectives collated extensive CCTV footage from around the transport interchange and used the visual evidence alongside the victim's detailed testimony to trace the suspect. BTP officers successfully tracked Obichukwu to his home address in Hertfordshire, where he was placed under arrest and subsequently charged by the Crown Prosecution Service.

During the trial, Obichukwu attempted to absolve himself of blame by asserting that the violent and non-consensual attacks were mutual, a fabrication that the jury swiftly rejected.

In addition to his two-year custodial sentence, Judge sentenced Obichukwu to a strict 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and ordered that he be placed on the sex offender register for a decade.

Speaking following the conclusion of the case, investigating officer Detective Constable Daniel Burke condemned the defendant's actions. He noted that Obichukwu had targeted a vulnerable lone woman and subjected her to a degrading attack at a high-volume public transport hub.

"He claimed his assault was consensual and took his case to trial, but fortunately the jury saw straight through his lies and he’s now behind bars where he belongs," Detective Constable Burke said. He reiterated that tackling violence and intimidation against women and girls remains a core priority for the force, urging anyone who experiences or witnesses similar offences on the railway network to report them immediately.
