Fugitive Child Sex Trafficker Sharam Muhamadi Extradited From Switzerland

A convicted child sex trafficker who fled the United Kingdom part-way through his trial has been remanded in custody after being tracked down to Switzerland and extradited to face justice.

Sharam Muhamadi appeared in the dock at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday following his arrest by Swiss authorities earlier this week.

The 21-year-old Iranian national stood unshaven and wearing a long off-white t-shirt as he faced a charge of failing to surrender to bail.

His appearance before the court marks the culmination of an international manhunt that began in June when he absconded during a harrowing trial that exposed a predatory grooming ring operating out of South Yorkshire.

Following his disappearance Muhamadi was unanimously convicted in his absence on June 9 of two counts of arranging or facilitating the travel of another person with a view to exploitation.

The trial had proceeded without him resulting in the conviction and subsequent sentencing of his Iraqi co-accused Bawan Harwe to 29 years in prison, who’s sentencing we previously reported on:

Addressing the defendant's barrister Lydia Carroll during the brief hearing Judge Sarah Wright noted the recent international

developments in the case.

Judge Wright told the court she understood Muhamadi had been arrested in Switzerland this week and brought back to the country.

While the judge acknowledged her understanding that the defendant speaks English she expressed uncertainty over whether he had been formally made aware that he was convicted in his absence of the severe exploitation charges by a jury earlier in the summer.

The court was also informed that a financial surety who had backed Muhamadi's bail application had been ordered to pay a sum of £19,000 as a direct result of his failure to attend the trial.

Remanding the defendant back into custody Judge Wright addressed Muhamadi directly to confirm there will be a further hearing in his case on September 3.

The convictions of Muhamadi and his 28-year-old accomplice stem from a calculated campaign of grooming and exploitation targeting highly vulnerable children.

The court previously heard that the two men who both worked in convenience stores in Doncaster and shared a flat in the Hexthorpe area of the town used fake identities to contact girls as young as 12 on the social media platform Snapchat.

Operating together they systematically enticed their victims to travel from other parts of South Yorkshire to addresses linked to the men in Doncaster. The jury was told the girls were lured into meeting the men in person with offers of illicit drugs, e-cigarettes, money and paid taxi journeys.

The exploitation escalated severely once the victims were isolated at the properties. Six of the seven young girls were supplied with alcohol and drugs before being subjected to horrific sexual abuse and rape at the hands of Harwe.

All seven complainants in the case were aged between 12 and 16 at the time the offences were committed. The court heard that some of the victims were friends who were transported together in pairs before being sexually abused.

During the June sentencing hearing for Harwe the court was told of the devastating psychological toll the abuse had taken on the young victims.

Many of the girls described feeling as though their lives had been entirely fractured into two distinct halves separating the time before they were subjected to the degrading abuse from the trauma they endure today.

The case has also drawn significant scrutiny regarding Muhamadi's immigration status and background in the United Kingdom.

South Yorkshire Police previously confirmed that the defendant had been remanded in custody between the time he was charged and the beginning of the trial but was subsequently released into the community after his defence team successfully mounted an application for bail.

It emerged during earlier proceedings that the Iranian national had entered the UK as an unaccompanied asylum seeker and was taken into the care of social services in Bradford. He formally claimed asylum in 2021 at the age of 16 and was granted leave to remain in the country the following year with his status scheduled to be reviewed in 2027.

Following the conclusion of the trial in June the sheer severity of the crimes prompted direct intervention from the highest levels of government. Border Security Minister Alex Norris publicly condemned the actions of the two men describing their offending as nothing short of monstrous.

Setting out the government's stance on foreign nationals convicted of such severe crimes Norris stated that sex offenders will be denied refugee protections and confirmed that the authorities will seek to deport them as soon as possible.

Muhamadi will remain in a secure prison facility until his next scheduled appearance before Sheffield Crown Court in September where proceedings regarding his sentencing are expected to continue.
