Attack Over Moped Dispute
A 17-year-old youth has been convicted at the Old Bailey for the brutal murder of Kamari Johnson, 16, during a bitter dispute over a stolen moped. The tragedy unfolded on May 24 last year in Bourne Avenue, Hayes, west London, where Kamari succumbed to a single stab wound to the chest delivered with a machete measuring nearly 30cm.
On Tuesday, the defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of murder and possession of an offensive weapon after a jury deliberated for over 13 hours.
The fatal confrontation stemmed from a planned transaction gone wrong. The court heard that Kamari and the defendant had connected over Snapchat, arranging a sale of a moped for £180. The meeting began with negotiation but soon turned sour.
According to prosecutor Joel Smith KC, Kamari took the defendant's money and sped away on the moped, breaking their agreement.
"It seems that when they met, having taken (the defendant's) cash, Mr Johnson went back on his side of the deal and simply rode off. In short, he took the money and ran."
Humiliated, disempowered and enraged, the defendant resolved to confront Kamari directly. Grabbing a curved-blade machete with lethal intent, he walked purposefully to Kamari's home just minutes after the theft.
CCTV footage presented in court captured the chilling sequence of events. The defendant was seen entering the residential street where Kamari lived. Moments later, Kamari emerged, riding the moped. The defendant, visibly clutching the large blade, pursued him on foot.
The fatal encounter occurred in plain view. Witnesses described seeing the machete, blood-stained and at least 30cm in length. The defendant struck Kamari once, a blow that pierced his chest and severed his heart. Despite his grievous injury, Kamari managed to flee but soon lost control of the moped, crashing it in a pub car park. He collapsed moments later and died on the pavement.
Police arrived at the scene to find Kamari unresponsive, his life extinguished by a single, savage act of violence.
During police interviews, the defendant refused to answer questions but offered a prepared statement, claiming self-defence. The jury found his explanation unconvincing, convicting him of murder and weapon possession.
As the verdict was announced, Kamari's family wept quietly, their grief palpable.
The defendant showed no emotion.
Judge Simon Mayo KC commended the jury for their service and lauded Kamari's family for their "composure and dignity" throughout the ordeal.
Sentencing is set for March 14, where the defendant faces a mandatory life term. He was remanded into custody.
