Philip Smith Jailed for 13 Years for Knifepoint Rape in Brighton
A 29-year-old man who raped a woman at knifepoint on a public bench in the centre of Brighton has been jailed for 13 years.
Philip Smith, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Hove Crown Court on Thursday, June 25, 2026, by Judge Christine Henson, who presided over his trial earlier this year.
A jury convicted Smith of two counts of rape on February 26, 2026, following a trial. Smith had already pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to charges of possessing a bladed article in a public place, possession of a class A drug and two counts of indecent exposure.
The court heard that the attack occurred at around 3:30 AM on Saturday, August 9, 2025, in Bartholomew Square, outside Brighton Town Hall.

Smith, who was 28 at the time of the offence, approached a 31-year-old woman, threatened her with a knife and subjected her to a serious sexual assault on a public bench.
The victim managed to use her mobile phone to contact a friend who was in the immediate area. The friend rushed to Bartholomew Square and disturbed Smith, causing him to flee the scene, before immediately contacting emergency services.
Sussex Police officers on patrol located Smith approximately 45 minutes later at the entrance of Quadrophenia Alley, off Little East Street.
Smith matched the description provided by the victim and was found to be in possession of class A drugs and two knives, one of which matched the weapon described by the victim.

After being taken into custody, Smith further exposed himself to two women inside the Brighton Custody Centre.
The prosecution revealed that at the time of the knifepoint rape, Smith was already at liberty on court bail and awaiting sentencing for the sexual assault of another woman in Brighton, which had taken place just four days earlier on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.
Because Smith denied the two counts of rape, Sussex Police launched a dedicated prosecution inquiry known as Op Timeline to gather the essential evidence required for a jury trial.
Speaking after the sentencing hearing, Detective Superintendent Andrew Harbour praised the quick thinking of the victim and the swift intervention of her friend, which directly ensured that a dangerous predator could be apprehended.

Superintendent Harbour emphasized that tackling violence against women and girls remains a paramount priority for Sussex Police.
Detective Constable Rachel Cutts also commended all the victims impacted by Smith’s behaviour for their steadfast support throughout a highly challenging investigation, noting that the defendant had targeted a woman in a public space where she had every right to feel safe.
