Manchester Airport Assault Retrial: Week 5 Summary
Jurors have now spent days locked in deliberations after hearing explosive claims of “out of control” police violence and brothers “fighting for their lives” and contrasting against the prosecution’s statements that “this case is just not complicated.”
As the Manchester Airport retrial entered its fifth week at Liverpool Crown Court, jurors heard final closing speeches from the defence before Judge Neil Flewitt KC began summing up the evidence and legal directions ahead of deliberations. Defence barristers for brothers Mohammed Fahir Amaaz and Muhammad Amaad accused armed officer PC Zachary Marsden of using excessive and unlawful force during the July 2024 confrontation at Terminal 2, while the prosecution maintained the defendants acted with unlawful violence against police officers attempting to detain them. Jurors were sent out to consider their verdicts on Tuesday afternoon and have continued deliberating throughout the week, with the judge opening on Friday morning by directing that majority verdicts of at least 10-2 would now be accepted.
