🔴 IRANIAN ASYLUM SEEKER JAILED FOR PREDATORY SEXUAL ASSAULT
An Iranian asylum seeker who entered the United Kingdom illegally has been sentenced to seven and a half years of extended imprisonment for the predatory sexual assault of a teenage girl.
Ahmadreza Khalafi, 29, appeared at St Albans Crown Court for sentencing after previously entering guilty pleas to four counts of sexual assault by touching.
The court heard that Khalafi, who was granted refugee status in the summer of 2024 following a claim of religious persecution, targeted his 19-year-old victim in Bishop’s Stortford in May of last year.
Legal proceedings established that Khalafi had secured his right to remain in the UK by claiming he would face persecution in Iran after converting to Christianity.
Abbie Johnson, who waived her legal right to anonymity, was attacked while playing a game of hide and seek with friends after a night out.
Prosecution evidence detailed how the defendant discovered the victim hiding in a bush before launching a forceful and aggressive assault that lasted between ten and twelve minutes.
CCTV footage of the incident was played in open court, documenting the duration and nature of the physical contact initiated by the defendant.
Sentencing the defendant, His Honour Judge Mann stated:
"You acted on that day as a sexual predator. You saw someone who was vulnerable and took advantage of her."
The judge further noted:
"I’m not entirely persuaded you don't know the difference between right and wrong, it doesn't your background, anyone would know not to go up to a helpless woman and sexually assault them. That’s not right anywhere."
The custodial element of the sentence was fixed at four and a half years, with a further three years to be served on licence upon his eventual release.
During the mitigation phase, defense barrister Joe Davidson argued: "Khalafi remains very much a foreigner, and is not someone who’s accustomed to alcohol and western norms."
The court was informed by the defense that the defendant "has very little formal education, very little cultural understanding of what is acceptable way to behave in England."
Victim impact evidence read by Abbie Johnson detailed the profound psychological trauma she has suffered, stating: "I no longer recognise myself, I am disconnected to the person I was before this."
The victim told the court she now feels "scared in her own home" and added: "Every time I leave the house, I’m wondering who’s around the corner."
Her mother, Stacey, provided testimony regarding the safety of the community, stating: "If people do come to this country and they commit a crime, to me, that should be instant deportation."
A Home Office spokesperson confirmed that all foreign national offenders receiving prison sentences are referred for deportation at the earliest possible opportunity.
Detective Sergeant Adam Haines from Hertfordshire Police commended the victim’s courage, noting that she has been "deeply affected by Khalafi’s actions to this day."
Khalafi remains in custody to begin his sentence, with the court ruling that he poses a significant and ongoing risk to the safety of women.
