It’s a scandal that’s torn through Westminster like a wrecking ball, Dale Vince OBE, the millionaire eco tycoon and Labour megadonor, was catapulted into a firestorm of political and legal fury after two media heavyweights accused him of backing Hamas, the terrorist organisation behind the October 7 massacre in Israel. The High Court judgment in Vince v. Staines and Vince v. Tice, handed down by Mr Justice Pepperall, exposed the sensationalist tactics of Paul Staines, aka Guido Fawkes and Reform UK MP Richard Tice, who both stood accused of spreading inflammatory claims suggesting Vince supported murderers, rapists and kidnappers.
THE HEADLINES THAT SET IT OFF. In March 2024, Guido Fawkes lit the fuse with two scathing online posts. The first, brazenly titled:
“MULTI-MILLION POUND DONOR TO LABOUR SAYS HAMAS ARE ‘FREEDOM FIGHTERS’”
This was followed the next day by:
“JEWISH MP BLASTS LABOUR FOR TAKING MILLIONS FROM ‘HAMAS FREEDOM FIGHTERS’ DONOR”
Both pieces featured Vince’s edited radio interview from Times Radio a 16-second clip supposedly showing him justifying Hamas’ actions. The articles suggested that Vince not only believed Hamas had the right to defend itself, but described its militants, responsible for murdering 1,200 people and raping women on 7 October as "freedom fighters."
The headlines, screaming in bold, set off a wave of social media outrage.
Tice, never one to miss an opportunity for political hay, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the article with his own damning words:
The court wasn’t having it.

Justice Pepperall didn’t mince words. He ruled both Guido Fawkes’ articles and Tice’s tweet defamed Vince at common law. They didn’t just allege a controversial opinion, they presented Vince as someone who outright supports mass murderers.
Key judicial findings:
PUBLIC OUTCRY “A BLOODY DISGRACE!”.
The court drama has unleashed a wave of fury not just from Vince’s camp, but across the political spectrum.
“I don’t even like Dale Vince,” said one left-leaning voter outside the Royal Courts of Justice, “but calling someone a Hamas sympathiser without evidence is bang out of order.”
Meanwhile, a Reform UK supporter offered a blunter view:
And on social media, hashtags like #DefamedByFawkes and #HamasHoax began trending after the ruling.
Sources close to Vince say the businessman and activist suffered distress after the online attacks. As a known public figure and donor to the Labour Party, the accusations not only tarnished his name, but reportedly caused “fear and anxiety” for his family’s safety.
An insider told VPN News:
Legal experts have hailed Justice Pepperall’s judgment as a masterclass in media law clarity.
Libel specialist Amanda Greaves told VPN:
Though this was only the preliminary hearing, Vince has cleared the first legal hurdle. The judge’s ruling paves the way for:
A legal source close to the claimant hinted at "substantial damages" being sought.
Vince may now pursue damages and media figures may think twice before fanning the flames with sensational claims.
