Woman Charged After Police Officer Shot in Nottingham City Centre
Aisha Zaman, 27, appeared in court charged with firearm offences after an adapted shotgun discharged and wounded PC Lee Lane at a Nottingham bus stop.
A 27-year-old woman has appeared in court accused of firearm offences after a police officer was shot in Nottingham city centre when an adapted weapon fell to the ground and discharged, while a second suspect has now been charged with assisting an offender.
Aisha Zaman, also known as the rapper ‘Bandit’, appeared before Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.
The charges follow an incident at a bus stop on Angel Row at 4.50am on Sunday, 18 October, during which PC Lee Lane sustained a gunshot wound to his foot.
Prosecutor Mairin Long told the court that Zaman, of Collison Street, Hyson Green, is alleged to have taken a sawn-off shotgun from an associate and concealed it inside her jacket shortly before police arrived. When PC Lane approached two individuals acting suspiciously at the bus stop, the weapon reportedly dropped onto the pavement and went off.
PC Lane was transported to hospital for emergency medical treatment and has since undergone multiple surgical procedures to address his injuries.
Wearing a grey tracksuit and dark blue raincoat in the dock, the defendant spoke only to confirm her full name, date of birth, and home address while members of her family sat in the public gallery. Details outlined by the prosecution noted that Zaman had spent the previous evening at a local bar before moving on to a nightclub and subsequently meeting others in the city centre. Presiding magistrates declined jurisdiction and remanded the defendant in custody ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing at Nottingham Crown Court on 20 November.
Detectives from Nottinghamshire Police have subsequently charged 35-year-old Jahmal Ruddock-Senior, of Gaul Street, Bulwell, with assisting an offender in connection with the shooting. Ruddock-Senior has been remanded to appear before Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Monday, 26 October.
Five further suspects initially detained during the investigation have been released on police bail pending further inquiries. These include two men, aged 24 and 30, and two women, aged 25 and 21, who were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, alongside a 33-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender.
