Peter Murrell Jailed for Five Years for Embezzling Over £400k From SNP
Former SNP Chief Jailed for 5 Years Over Embezzled Funds
Former Scottish National Party chief executive Peter Murrell has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison at the High Court in Edinburgh after admitting to embezzling more than £400,000 from his own party.
The 61-year-old showed no emotion, staring straight ahead and blinking several times, as Judge Lord Young delivered the sentence.
Wearing a dark suit and navy tie, Murrell was handcuffed to a prison officer, the metal cuffs jangling audibly as he was led from the dock to begin his custodial term.
Lord Young told the court that Murrell had carried out a "calculated and dishonest" series of fraudulent acts over a 12-year period between 2010 and 2022, noting that while the embezzlement was "not particularly sophisticated," his senior position allowed him to circumvent established checks and balances.
The judge categorised the offending as a "significant breach of trust" that increased in frequency over time and was only halted when the criminality was eventually detected.

The court was presented with 125 pages of documentary evidence detailing exactly how the embezzled £400,000 was spent on luxury goods, vehicles, and lifestyle items.
The largest single fraudulent transaction occurred in 2020, when Murrell spent £124,550 on a luxury motorhome, paying for it entirely with party funds and subsequently creating false documents to disguise the purchase as a legitimate campaign expense.
Further expenditures included £16,489 of SNP money put towards a £33,000 Volkswagen Golf in early 2016, and the use of £57,500 in party cash to purchase a Jaguar I-PACE in 2019, which he sold two years later for £47,378.76.
Prosecutors also detailed the purchase of two Bremont watches totalling £9,350, a £4,225 Starwalker World Time fountain pen, and a £3,500 Hamilton and Inches silver wine coaster.

During mitigation, defence lawyer John Scullion KC informed the court that his client expected no sympathy and acknowledged that a custodial sentence was the only appropriate disposal for the crimes committed.
Scullion described Murrell as an individual who is now "overwhelmed by feelings of embarrassment and shame," noting that the former executive has been entirely ostracised by friends and colleagues and has become a "figure of public ridicule."
The defence argued that Murrell's humiliation, which has permanently ended his career and future prospects, goes far beyond the boundaries of any prison sentence.
The court was also informed of the emotional toll on Murrell's estranged wife, former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon; her lawyer released a statement confirming she has been profoundly "let down" by her husband and remains "angry, hurt and distressed" by the ordeal.

Murrell's prison term was reduced from a starting point of seven years strictly due to his early guilty plea at the preliminary hearing, and the sentence has been backdated to May 25, the date he was initially remanded in custody.
While risk assessments deemed Murrell to be at "minimal risk" of general reoffending, the judge remarked that he could identify no mitigating factors that drove the initial offending, stating it remained "very difficult to get a clear picture" of his motives.
Following the sentencing, Scotland’s new Lord Advocate, Ruth Charteris KC, alongside Crown Office Chief Executive John Logue, praised the meticulous work of police and prosecutors, revealing that more than 500 witness statements were gathered during a highly scrutinized and complex investigation.
The legal proceedings will now advance to a Proceeds of Crime hearing scheduled for September 14 in Edinburgh, where the final repayment sum, adjusted for inflation, will be established.
The court was assured by both the Crown and the defence that sufficient funds—which were held under Murrell’s sole control—are available, and that the former chief executive fully intends to repay the embezzled money.
