🔴 Mother Convicted Of Helping Killer Son Attempt Escape After Cody Fisher Nightclub Murder
Jahzeen Carpenter convicted of helping killer son plan escape to Jamaica after Cody Fisher’s nightclub stabbing. Sentencing set for October 15. A mother who tried to help her son flee the country in the aftermath of the fatal stabbing of Cody Fisher has been found guilty of assisting an offender.
Jahzeen Carpenter, 40, drove to London a day after her son, Kami Carpenter, fatally stabbed 23-year-old Mr Fisher at the Crane nightclub in Digbeth, Birmingham, late on Boxing Day 2022.
Arrest in London
On 27 December, Carpenter arrived in London in her white Mercedes convertible. Her son was with her, carrying two suitcases of clothing. The following morning, at around 8.30am, officers from West Midlands Police and the Metropolitan Police moved in outside flats in Lewisham, south-east London, arresting both mother and son.
A search of Carpenter’s car uncovered more than £5,000 in cash. Analysis of her phone revealed she had researched flights from Gatwick Airport to Kingston, Jamaica. A booking had been made for her son on a flight due to leave at 1.20pm on the very day of their arrest.
Trial and verdict
At Wolverhampton Crown Court, Carpenter, of Peak Drive, Lower Gornal, was convicted of assisting an offender. She is due to be sentenced on 15 October.
Detective Inspector Phil Poole, of West Midlands Police’s homicide team, said:
“Cody’s murder left his family and friends devastated. While they were grieving, Carpenter’s mother was trying to help her son escape justice. Had he succeeded, our investigation would have been severely hampered and justice for Cody’s family delayed.”
He added:
“This conviction shows how many lives and families knife crime can destroy. Our thoughts remain with Cody’s family.”
The murder of Cody Fisher
Last year, Kami Carpenter, now 24, was jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 25 years before being considered for release. His co-defendant, Remy Gordon, was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 26 years.
The court had heard how Gordon’s hostility towards Mr Fisher stemmed from a chance encounter days earlier. The two men had briefly exchanged words after bumping into each other at Popworld nightclub in Solihull. Gordon later searched social media to identify Mr Fisher and learned he would be at the Crane on Boxing Day.
Just before midnight, inside the crowded nightclub, Mr Fisher was surrounded, headbutted, punched and kicked. He was stabbed once in the chest and died at the scene from the wound.
Three men were found guilty at trial, with messages between them painting a vivid picture of their earlier bravado and later panic.
