🔴 Knife Attacker Jailed After Brutal Street Stabbing
Scooter rider left in coma after brutal Selly Oak knife attack. Jalen Denny caught by facial recognition & jailed for over 5 years.
A Birmingham man who launched a frenzied knife attack on a scooter rider has been jailed for more than five years after being identified through facial recognition technology.
The victim, 33, was riding along Bristol Road in Selly Oak when he was confronted by 27-year-old Jalen Denny. CCTV captured the pair clashing on North Road before Denny pulled out a blade and repeatedly stabbed the rider in the stomach and shoulder.
The victim was rushed to hospital where he underwent two emergency surgeries and was placed in an induced coma. Police said he was “lucky to be alive” after the brutal assault, which took place around 8.30pm on 1 June last year.
Detectives retrieved a clear CCTV image of Denny’s face and used facial recognition to run comparisons against the Police National Database. Within 48 hours, investigators had matched him to stored images and linked his phone to the area at the time of the attack.
Originally charged with attempted murder, Denny, of Pershore Road, Selly Oak, admitted wounding with intent. He was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, receiving five years and 10 months behind bars, plus a further five years on licence.
PC Zach Bilili from the Major Crime Unit said: “Facial recognition helped us find Denny really quickly. The victim’s injuries were severe – this could so easily have been a murder investigation.”
The conviction formed part of Operation Target, West Midlands Police’s crackdown on serious violence.
