A 36-year-old man has been charged with multiple serious offenses following a crash in Derby that left seven people seriously injured.
The incident occurred in Friar Gate, Derby, at approximately 21:30 GMT on Saturday evening. A black Suzuki Swift collided with seven pedestrians, leaving them all seriously injured. The driver, identified as Sandhu Ponnachan of Alvaston, has been charged with six counts of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and one count each of attempted GBH with intent, dangerous driving, and possession of a bladed article.
According to the charges brought by police, Ponnachan faces a total of eight offenses related to the crash. These include multiple counts of GBH with intent, which carry potentially severe penalties under UK law. Additionally, he is accused of dangerous driving, a charge that could result in significant restrictions on his ability to operate a vehicle in the future.
Ch Supt Emma Aldred, who led the investigation, described the charges as 'positive news' but emphasized that the case remains ongoing. She stressed the importance of allowing the legal process to unfold without presumption of guilt. 'Our focus now is on supporting the victims and their families while ensuring justice is served,' she stated.
The involvement of counter-terrorism police in this case has raised eyebrows, though it was clarified as a routine precaution rather than an indication of any specific terrorist motive. Such practices are common in cases where the circumstances surrounding an incident suggest potential links to extremism or other serious crimes requiring specialized investigation.
Local residents and witnesses have described the scene as chaotic and distressing. The crash occurred in a busy pedestrian area, highlighting the vulnerabilities inherent in urban transportation systems and the need for stricter road safety measures.
This incident has drawn attention to the broader issue of dangerous driving in Derby and across the UK. Advocacy groups are calling for tougher penalties and increased enforcement to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
