Sarah Sackman MP condemns the lack of support from moderate voices and anti-racist groups amid rising antisemitic attacks in her constituency.
In a recent statement, Sarah Sackman, the Labour MP for Golders Green, has sharply criticized sections of the liberal left for their muted response to escalating antisemitism targeting the Jewish community in her area. This comes amidst a series of violent incidents, including an attempted murder and arson attacks, which have deeply concerned local residents.
The violence peaked on May 2nd when Essa Suleiman, a 45-year-old man, was charged with attempting to murder Shloime Rand and Moshe Shine in Golders Green. The same day, he allegedly stabbed Ishmail Hussein in Southwark, marking the latest in a string of attacks that have shaken the community.
Earlier this year, an attempted arson attack on a memorial wall near Golders Green added to the turmoil. In March, a fire destroyed four Jewish community ambulances, underscoring the severity of the situation. These incidents have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among local Jews.
Despite these alarming events, Sackman noted that support from Christian and Muslim faith leaders has been more vocal compared to moderate voices and anti-racist organizations. She emphasized the need for tangible action and public backing to address this growing issue of antisemitism.

In a pointed critique, Sackman questioned where the marches and statements supporting the Jewish community were, highlighting the lack of solidarity from certain quarters. She also criticized tech platforms, the NHS, and universities for allowing hate speech to proliferate, exacerbating tensions.
Drawing on historical precedence, Sackman referenced the 2013 incident in Barnet, where the Somali community offered assistance after an arson attack on a synagogue. This example, she noted, stands in stark contrast to the current lack of response from some expected allies.
Sackman clarified that her concerns are not directed at stifling criticism of Israel or Palestinian rights but rather aimed at addressing behaviors that intimidate Jewish communities. She urged institutions to examine their cultures and policies to better understand the challenges faced by Jews in the UK.
As the legal proceedings against Essa Suleiman continue, the sub judice principle poses a risk, making it crucial to handle these details sensitively. The case highlights the broader issue of antisemitism and the need for united responses from all sectors of society.

Looking ahead, Sackman's call for solidarity may prompt further dialogue and actions among various groups. The Jewish community in Golders Green hopes that this renewed focus will lead to safer and more supportive environments.
